Database Basics and the ADM

Become familiar with databases, related terminology and how the GIM Suite stores data.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the features of a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). 

  • Discuss the concept of an RDBMS.
  • Explain client/server relationship in the context of RDBMS.
  • Identify the main database software companies.

 

2. Describe the fundamental components of the CorpAssay ADM. 

  • Recognise the relationship between tables, records and fields.
  • Define primary keys, foreign keys, required, fixed and virtual fields.
  • Explain indexes.
  • Explain the different relationships within the CorpAssay ADM, including parent/child relationships and referential integrity.
  • Explain check constraints.
  • Recognise how cascade updates and deletes support referential integrity.
  • Identify and discuss the data types used within the CorpAssay ADM.
  • Define NULL and discuss its significance.
  • Identify and discuss the main areas within the CorpAssay ADM.
  • Summarise the four major table types and the relationships between them.
  • Explain the purpose of compound definitions.
  • Explain the purpose of stored procedures (SPs) and functions, and the role each plays.
  • Explain the purpose of each table in the CorpAssay ADM.
  • Discuss the role of triggers.
  • Explain the rationale for a meta system.

 

3. Explain how the CorpAssay ADM is designed to support different workflows. 

  • Explain the concept of workflow.
  • Explain Data Load Order (DLO) and how it assists with workflow management.
  • Recognise the significance of the DLO value ”0”.
  • Discuss other ADMs offered by acQuire and how they fit into the core CorpAssay ADM.

 

4. Demonstrate the ability to maintain a database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and create an ODBC connection. 

  • Connect to a database.
  • Backup and restore a database.
  • Copy a database.
  • Shrink a database.
  • Distinguish between case-sensitive and case-insensitive databases and discuss the implications of using each.
  • Explain the purpose of user accounts.
  • Explain the purpose of database roles with a specific emphasis on ACQ_USER and ACQ_ADMIN.
  • Create an ODBC connection for client access.
